Idag, söndagen den 21 december klockan 16:03 inträder Vintersolståndet här i Norden. Skiftet in mot en ljusare årstid är en innerligt och djupt efterlängtad högtid och firandet av ljusets återkomst mycket viktigt för oss nordbor. Just denna dag lever vi igenom vår allra mörkaste dag på året. I våra nordligaste delar når solen inte ens upp över horisonten. Men nu inträder den tidpunkt då ljuset sakta börjar återvända till oss här på norra halvklotet.
Det är en sällsynt och finstämd möjlighet att vara och vistas i naturen denna dag, i samvaro med naturens rörelser och himlakropparnas rotation. Vintersolståndet signalerar ett löfte om nytt liv för alla och envar, både till de djur och växter som gått i djup dvala och dem som vakar igenom vintern. Nu vaknar hoppet om ännu en vår.
Vikingablot
Traditionellt sett när människorna levde i och med naturen, genomfördes blot i Skandinavien vid midvinter. Det var ett sätt att markera att ljuset vände tillbaka efter årets mörkaste tid, garantera solens återkomst och säkerställa kommande års välstånd och goda skördar. Blot kan enkelt beskrivas som en stor fest med eld, ritualer och offer, en festmåltid med kött och mjöd, vilket speglade ett stort värde av att dela generöst.

Today, Sunday, December 21 at 4:03 PM, the Winter Solstice will begin here in the Nordic countries. The shift towards a brighter season is a deeply and long-awaited holiday and the celebration of the return of light is very important for us Nordics. On this very day, we are living through our darkest day of the year. In our northernmost parts, the sun does not even reach the horizon. But now comes the time when the light slowly begins to return to us here in the northern hemisphere.
It is a rare, finely tuned opportunity to be and stay in nature on this day, in communion with the movements of nature and the rotation of the celestial bodies. The Winter Solstice signals a promise of new life for each and everyone, to the animals and plants that have gone into deep hibernation and those who are awake and guarding through the winter. Now awakens the hope of a coming spring.
The Blót by Vikings
Traditionally, when people lived in and with nature, a blót (old Norse word) was performed in Scandinavia at midwinter. It was a way to mark the return of light after the darkest time of the year, guaranteeing the return of the sun and ensuring the coming year’s prosperity and good harvests. Blót can simply be described as a great feast with fire, rituals and offerings, a feast of meat and mead, which reflected a great value of sharing generously.
